Disability Insurance for Doctors: Mistakes Physicians Should Avoid

As a physician, your income is one of your most valuable assets, but an unexpected injury or health issue could put it at risk. Disability insurance for doctors is essential for protecting your financial future, yet many physicians make critical mistakes when selecting or managing their coverage.

In this guide, we’ll explore some of the most common pitfalls—from relying solely on group plans to failing to update coverage as your income grows—and how to avoid them. With the right approach, you can ensure long-term financial security and continue supporting your family, even if you’re unable to practice.

Mistake #1: Relying Solely on Group Disability Insurance

Many doctors assume the disability insurance offered by their employer or medical association is enough. While group policies provide some level of protection, they often come with major limitations that only become clear when it’s time to file a claim.

Group vs. Individual Disability Insurance

Group policies are tied to your employer, which means you lose coverage if you change jobs, switch practices, or open your own. Plus, if your employer pays the premiums, the benefits you receive will likely be taxed, which reduces your payout. These policies also tend to have stricter definitions of disability, making it harder to qualify for benefits.

Individual disability insurance, however, stays with you no matter where you work. You also have more flexibility to customize your coverage, and since you’re paying the premiums, the benefits you receive are usually tax-free. While these policies may cost more, they offer stronger guarantees and better long-term protection.

How to Make Sure You Have Enough Coverage

Even if you have a group disability insurance plan, it may not provide the full protection you need. Supplementing it with additional coverage can help ensure your income is safeguarded in case of an unexpected disability

PRS can help you evaluate your options and find the right balance between group and individual coverage. Contact us today to discuss a plan that aligns with your specialty, income level, and long-term financial goals.

Mistake #2: Choosing the Wrong Own-Occupation Policy

You’ve probably heard that doctors should get an own-occupation disability insurance policy, but not all of these policies are the same. If you don’t pay close attention to the fine print, you might end up with a plan that doesn’t provide as much protection as you think.

Understanding Own-Occupation Coverage

A true own-occupation policy pays benefits if you can’t perform the key duties of your specific medical specialty—even if you’re still able to work in another field. For example, if a surgeon develops a hand injury and can no longer operate, they should still qualify for full benefits under a strong own-occupation policy, even if they could technically work as a professor or medical consultant.

Some policies, however, water down their own-occupation definitions. They may say you’re only disabled if you can’t work in any job at all, or they might reduce or eliminate benefits after a few years. That could leave you without support when you need it most.

How to Pick the Right Own-Occupation Policy

Not all own-occupation disability insurance policies offer the same level of protection. Some plans may shift to an any-occupation definition over time, while others have limitations on how long benefits are paid. Understanding these differences is essential in selecting a policy that truly safeguards your ability to practice in your specialty.

Navigating disability insurance for doctors can be complex, but understanding your options is key to securing reliable coverage. Learn more about PRS’s disability insurance solutions and how they can help you make informed decisions about protecting your income

Mistake #3: Overlooking Important Policy Riders

A basic disability insurance policy gives you the foundation for income protection, but if you don’t add key policy riders, you could end up underinsured when life changes.

Important Riders for Disability Insurance for Physicians

●       Residual Disability Rider: Pays partial benefits if you can still work but have a reduced income due to a partial disability. This is important for doctors who rely on hands-on procedures.

●       Future Purchase Option Rider: Lets you increase your coverage as your income grows, without needing another medical exam. Essential if you’re early in your career.

●       Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Rider: Adjusts your benefits for inflation so they keep up with rising expenses.

●       Catastrophic Disability Rider: Provides additional benefits for severe disabilities that prevent you from handling basic daily activities.

Why These Riders Matter

Policy riders customize your coverage and help you adapt to changes in your career and personal life. Without them, your benefits might not keep up with inflation, your income growth, or partial disabilities that still affect your ability to earn. Choosing the right riders ensures your policy is strong enough to support you, no matter what happens.

Mistake #4: Not Disclosing Pre-Existing Conditions

Some doctors hesitate to report pre-existing health conditions when applying for disability insurance, fearing it will increase premiums or lead to policy exclusions. While this might seem like a way to save money, it can backfire when you need to file a claim.

What Happens If You Leave Out a Pre-Existing Condition?

Insurance companies thoroughly investigate your medical history. If they discover an undisclosed condition, they can deny your claim or even cancel your entire policy. That could leave you with no coverage when you need it most.

How to Handle Pre-Existing Conditions the Right Way

Pre-existing conditions can affect disability insurance coverage, but that doesn’t mean protection isn’t available. Some policies may have exclusions, while others still provide full benefits for unrelated conditions.

PRS can help you navigate your options and find a policy that fits your situation. Reach out today to discuss the best approach to securing coverage while ensuring long-term financial protection.

Mistake #5: Not Updating Coverage as Income Grows

Many doctors buy a disability insurance policy early in their careers but never adjust it as their income increases. While this might not seem like a big deal, failing to update your coverage could leave you underinsured if you ever need to file a claim.

Why You Need to Review Your Policy Regularly

Your income today is probably higher than it was when you first bought your policy. If your disability benefits are based on your past earnings, you might find yourself short on income if you ever have to stop working. This can be especially concerning if you have more financial responsibilities now—like student loans, a mortgage, or a family to support.

How to Keep Your Disability Insurance Up to Date

As your career progresses, your disability insurance coverage should keep pace with changes in your income and financial responsibilities. Major life events—like getting married, buying a home, or transitioning to a new practice—can impact your coverage needs.

PRS can help you assess your policy and explore options to ensure your benefits remain aligned with your financial goals. Connect with us today to review your coverage and make sure you’re fully protected.
