GSI Disability Insurance for Residents and Fellows
Physician’s Resource Services (PRS) works directly with GME programs to give residents something most physicians never get: disability coverage without medical underwriting.
Guaranteed standard issue disability programs designed with your GME department, giving eligible residents and fellows individual coverage without medical underwriting at negotiated rates.
Financial wellness lectures presented to the GME departments we support, covering cashflow, insurance and risk management, taxes, and saving and investing. Attending a lecture can count toward one ACGME wellness module credit.
Most residents know they need income protection. The problem is that the best time to buy it arrives while they are focused on training.
An individually underwritten policy reviews your medical history. Medical conditions and prescriptions diagnosed prior to applying can lead to exclusions, higher premiums, or a declined application. A GSI disability policy is issued to eligible participants without the usual health questions and medical background check.
GSI disability insurance is available through approved participating residency and fellowship programs, not on the open market. A GSI insurance policy is mandatory for residents and fellows in these GME programs. Enrollment happens with the rest of the benefits package at the institution’s program orientation.
Between student loan payments and a training salary, premiums matter. PRS negotiates discounts for GME programs so residents can lock in protection at a cost that fits their current income.
Physician disability income insurance is a long-term coverage built for medical professionals. Because most injuries occur away from the job, workers’ compensation isn’t applicable when a doctor becomes ill and can no longer perform their duties to their best ability.

Access to financial wellness education
Building a financial foundation is daunting. Physician’s Resource Services strives to make it simple. Since 2007, we’ve supported physicians in 49 states with excellent consultative services and educational tools. We want to help you next.
Guaranteed standard issue disability insurance gives you a foundation of protection before your attending income begins and goes with you into practice. And as your income grows, PRS can help you layer additional coverage on top of your GSI policy as part of your financial plan.
PRS has served physicians since 2007, with offices at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and the Rebecca Sealy Building at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston alongside our Austin headquarters. We work directly with GME program administrators, so we understand your program’s offer before you ask about it. Our advisors also coordinate your disability coverage with student loan, tax, and retirement planning, so each decision supports the next. Learn more about how we support residents and fellows.
Who is eligible for GSI disability insurance?
Residents and fellows in a participating GME program are eligible during that program’s enrollment period. Eligibility rules are set at the program level. A PRS advisor can confirm whether your program offers GSI insurance.
What if my GME program doesn’t work with Physicians Resource Services (PRS)? Can I still apply for GSI insurance?
An individual doctor who doesn’t have access to a GSI (guaranteed standard issue) disability insurance program that is already approved at their GME location, would have to apply for coverage with normal underwriting. GSI disability insurance programs must be approved by the carrier to be offered at a GME program. Not all programs have one available. If yours doesn’t let us know and we can work on getting one implemented.
Is a GSI policy the same as group disability coverage?
No. A GSI policy is an individual policy issued in your name, while group long-term disability is an employer plan. Many residents carry both, using the GSI policy to add protection that group coverage does not provide.
Do I need a medical exam for guaranteed standard issue disability insurance?
No. Eligible participants enroll without a medical exam or health questions. Enrolling during your window avoids the underwriting review an individual policy would require later.
What happens to my GSI insurance after residency?
A PRS advisor reviews your coverage before graduation so it keeps pace with your attending income.
Can I increase my coverage after my GSI policy is issued?
Yes. Additional coverage is typically available as your income grows, though amounts above your GSI benefit may require underwriting. PRS helps you plan those increases around your career milestones.
Disability insurance protects your ability to earn and helps keep your career on course. PRS can help you find the coverage you require.
